Community Garden Platz der Einheit, Oderberg
A collaborative project between KuNaKu, the city of Oderberg and local community members.
We had longed hoped that something could happen with the bare land, which is something of an eyesore, located between the Youth Club and two city-owned apartment blocks at Platz der Einheit. In the Spring of 2021 during regular City Development Meetings, open to everyone, the wish arose from multiple sides for a community garden in Oderberg. As it turns out, the afore mentioned land, pictured also below, belonged to the city. It had previously been the location of an apartment block, which was torn down in 2015.
KuNaKu then created a flyer (text below), in order to find participants and volunteers for the project:

Liebe Anwohner, liebe Oderberger,
die Stadtverordnetenversammlung hat die Erlaubnis für die Gestaltung des Platzes der Einheit durch BürgerInnen im Rahmen eines Gemeinschaftsgartenprojektes gegeben. Das war der erste Schritt, angestoßen durch die häufige Ansprache eines solchen Vorhabens beim Forum Stadtentwicklung. Der zweite ist nun, Interessierte/Engagierte/Pflanzbegeisterte zusammen zu trommeln, damit das Projekt starten kann. Gemeinsam können die Gestaltung und Details ausgearbeitet werden. Es können Beete und Hochbeete für die private Nutzung angelegt, Beerensträucher für alle gepflanzt, Sitzecken oder ein Grillplatz gestaltet und eine Blühwiese angelegt werden, um nur einige Beispiele zu nennen.

The first community action: November 12th – 14th, 2021
We have taken the first steps and built the basic structure of the garden! Planting has begun and the raised beds are ready to be used in the Spring.
Over three days a group of adults and approximately 20 children took part in our community garden event. On Friday afternoon we presented the garden concept and its elements to the children. The children then had the chance to draw out their ideas on paper and present them to the group. There were brilliant ideas such as a barefoot sensation path and a community hammock.
On Saturday November 13th, 10 raised beds, 1.5 by 1 meter were built. Stamping the corner posts into the ground required a lot of manpower and was primarily the work of two residents at Platz der Einheit and Manuel (from KuNaKu). The wood came as a donation from KuNaKu.
The cobblestones were a donation from the Museum in Oderberg and were used to build a herb spiral at the center of the garden, as well as for a salamander-shaped stone garden and half circle beds at the end of the raised beds.
On Sunday November 14th everyone joined together to prepare the beds with layers of cardboard and then earth. Various varieties of hardy plants and groundcover were donated from the Winter family, Daniel Roche, the Perspektive Oderberg e.V. and more. These were planted in the small, proximal beds and in the herb spiral.
At last, it was time for celebration! The children, lead by Liz Erber and Beata Kana, presented a dance performance, as part of a TanzMachtStark! Project. At the end, the audience was invited to join hands and spiral through the garden while singing together.
You can’t have an afternoon celebration in Germany without cake and coffee. The women from the Perspektive Oderberg e.V. did not disappoint with their many plates of sweet treats. We thank them for their support, the team of organizers, everyone who participated and those that generously donated to the project. Thank you very much!
How does it continue?
We hope that most of the raised beds will be used, planted and cared for by residents at Platz der Einheit. Several families are already involved. Starting in early spring we are planning monthly meetings. In addition to caring for the garden, there will be food to share and a film for children.
Everyone is invited to participate! Donations (time, seeds, plants, garden knowledge, as well as other garden materials) are warmly welcomed.
Wir zusammen!
Wir Zusammen! ist eine Willkommensinitiative für Flüchtlinge und Menschen mit internationalem Hintergrund, die in Oderberg landen. Obwohl die Oderberger oft freundlich und offen sind, wissen wir, dass es nicht immer einfach ist, in ländlichen Regionen anzukommen.
Wir wollen schauen, dass alle sich willkommen fühlen und haben was sie brauchen, um hier anzukommen. Wir finden Diversität der Bevölkerung wertvoll und würden begrüßen, wenn mehr Zugezogene hier bleiben.
Wir arbeiten hierfür zusammen mit dem Flüchtlingsheim in Oderberg und anderen BürgerInnen vor Ort.
Umziehen & Rennovationshilfe
Beim Umzug vom Flüchtlingsheim in eine eigene Wohnung können einige der Familien Unterstützung gebrauchen. Dafür sammeln wir freiwillige Arbeiter, sowie Sachspenden.
Weihnachtsaktion
Für Weihnachten sammeln wir Geschenke für die Kinder und Familien im Flüchtlingsheim. Zurzeit (Ende 2021) gibt es 15 Kinder im Alter von 1 bis 17 Jahren im Heim.
Gemeinschaftsgarten
Der Gemeinschaftsgarten am Platz der Einheit bietet Gartenfläche (Beete) für alle die selber Pflanzen und Ernten wollen.
Monatliches Multikulti Café
Eine Aktion zusammen mit dem Gemeinschaftsgarten. Jeden Monat wird gesellig einen Gericht von irgendwo aus der Welt gemeinsam gekocht und gegessen. Auch geplant ist einen Kinderfilm zu zeigen.
